Tax clarification

e-Residency does NOT confer Estonian tax residency. It enables 0% corporate tax on retained/reinvested earnings — tax is due only upon profit distribution at 22% (2026 rate). Personal tax residency is determined separately by where the individual actually lives.

Banking

As of 2026, opening a traditional Estonian bank account (LHV, Swedbank, SEB) as a purely remote e-Resident with no local counterparties is difficult. Wise Business and Revolut Business accept e-Residency-only applications at significantly higher approval rates and are the practical default.

History

Estonia launched e-Residency in December 2014, the world's first programme of its kind. It runs on Estonia's X-Road digital infrastructure layer, the same system underpinning nearly all Estonian government and business services.

Related programs

Many founders obtain the Digital Nomad Visa first to physically relocate to Estonia, then separately apply for e-Residency to form a company. e-Residency alone does not grant any right to enter or live in Estonia.

Estonia Digital Nomad Visa

For physically residing in Estonia while working remotely for employers or clients outside Estonia.

Estonia Startup Visa

For tech founders relocating to build a Startup Committee-approved company with a path to long-term residence.
