Cabin
Cabin was a DAO-governed coliving network that voted to wind down formal governance in 2025. Individual neighborhoods continue operating independently.
Timeline
Founded: 2021, by Jon Hillis — explicitly described as a twist on Balaji Srinivasan's 'network state' concept, combining blockchain membership with tiny homes and tight-knit physical communities. Began as Neighborhood Zero, a 28-acre property in the Texas Hill Country.
Cabin neighborhoods continue to operate independently as coliving hubs for digital nomads and remote workers, as a 'proof of possibility' that internet-native communities can instantiate physically. The most recent public description of the network listed 21+ coliving properties across France, Costa Rica, Portugal, Slovenia, Bali, Japan, and roughly a dozen US locations.
While the DAO operated, entry was via a 'Cabin Week' — a 1-2 week stay with 6-10 other community members at a flagship neighborhood. Successful completion granted 'Citizenship,' represented by an NFT, with access to global properties and perks. 'Neighborhood' status for a property required accruing 1,000 ₡ABIN governance token votes.
